Whoa: Speaking of friends doing awesome things…

Marianna1 is starring in a play directed by Jeff Daniels?!!

Holy crap! Congratulations Mary!

L + W

1 You might know Mary from our movies Blood Stew or the Country Club Killer, Christmas in Its Youth, Fun’s Over and the fifth episode of Halloween Face: A Real Horror Show. That’s right Mr Daniels - we’ve been casting her since she was like 17.

Whoa: “Recap Rock”, “The Ballad of Sayid Jarrah”

If yr like me and whit and can’t get enough of:
a) LOST
b) novelty

We highly recommend Jeff C’s previouslyonlostmusic. There you’ll find songs accurately recapping every episode of Season 4!

Considering this, recording the Vampire Weekend album and (heck) doing sound for Blondes in the Jungle, I’d say Jeff has a pretty good claim to having his finger on the pulse of the ears of our generation.

Knights of the Golden Eagle

When I was in seventh grade, I was presented with a certificate for science. When they gave it to me, I ate it in front of the whole class. I did that first because I was just a weirder person than I can even now imagine; second cuz I didn’t, y’know, study antimatter to please my teachers; and third cuz I figured I was super-entitled to certificates and would be getting them all the time forever.

Well that proved to be true. I just won a CINE Golden Eagle award for Squamates on the Move: Lizard and Snake Locomotion, a video I made for the Museum of Natural History. It comes with a certificate and everything.

Plus, you know who else won a Golden Eagle? ROBERT EFFING ALTMAN.

So, yes - Thanks to the producer Lee, the boss Mindy and all the herpetologists who confirmed the known-unknown that herpetologists are crazy and they throw poisonous snakes at people as a goof.

Sincerely,
KGE

Snow WAY!

OMG, I’ve waiting forever for it to snow so I could post this!

In January 1494, snow fell heavily in Florence and one of the strangest artistic commissions of all time took place. The new ruler of the city, Piero de’Medici, commissioned Michelangelo to make a snowman. It was the only occasion on which Piero asked Michelangelo to do anything. It might have been taken as a bit of an insult, but Michelangelo entered into the spirit of the thing and created something which, contemporary observers remarked, had to be the most beautiful snowman ever made.

Amazing right?!

Oh, and if you want more snowmen stories, this (27 minutes in - the second story -”Super Duper”) is probably the only time the internet really actually made me ROTFL. And that’s every time I listen to it. I give it my highest recommendation.

Longly underweared,
L

Knowing me (Barack Obama), Knowing you (America) …. A-HA!!

Was stuck inside pulling 20 hour editing sessions all last week and eventually ran out of Gilmore Girls and Miami Vice DVDs, so I ventured into the weird world of listening to people talk. This is what I found…

1. “British radio comedy” is not one of the things I ever expected to say I like. But Knowing Me, Knowing You - the fictional talk show from the 90’s where Steve Coogan developed the Alan Partridge character before taking him to TV and then transforming him into Tony Wilson for 24 Hour Party People - is hilarious. Download NONSTOP LAFFS.

2. Talking to people these last few days about Obama (trying to convince people to agree with my politics is another thing I never expected to do) I’ve felt like mentioning his style or the stories he tells is considered cheating. Everyone agrees he’s better at that than Hillary, but the feeling is that anything non-policy he says is irrelevant to what he’ll “really do”. But for me, that is what got me excited about him in the first place. Maybe it’s because I’m an artist, but I put I value on images and stories. I believe that the way you envision your world provides the framework for everything you do - gives your actions direction and continuity, and allows other people to follow you. (Tony Wilson with the Hacienda is a great example. To be covered in a later post.)

So the best I can do if you’re still deciding about tomorrow is recommend you listen to chapter two of Audacity of Hope, read by Barack Obama (starting about 20 minutes into this mpfree). It’s amazing titled “Our Constitution”.
