Donna Juana (or if Don Juan Was a Woman) Ø - Let the Good Vibes Get A Lot Stronger
Sorry guys. I’ve got no excuse for not doing my WHFR radio show tonight. Some days just get away from you (y’know, Rog?).
BUT FOR GOOD MUSIC:
1) Please be aware that DJ/Rupture now has a regular show on WFMU. I’m really glad about this. First cuz though I’m very in favor of WFMU theoretically, since Donna Summer and Mosurak stopped doing shows I feel like everytime I turn it on, they’re just playing some goofy shit.
Second, because Didn’t breakcore in NYC seem a lot more relevant when Donna Summer was doing his show? Even from Berlin? Obviously breakcore declined for all sorts of reasons. But I think was MADE RELEVANT to me by having a weekly home on Summer’s show.
Well, FUN-nily enough DJ/Rupture’s first guest is ex-breakcore dude Drop the Lime, who I think I first heard on Donna Summer. Based on this episode, and based on my following his music&blog for a few years, I suspect Rupture is going to be building a home for some very exciting music (& such) on this new show.
(And if Ball Deep has a 5 year plan, its for us to build something like that for movies. Natch, I don’t really know what that means yet.)
2) And whoa, Very Thematically Related MP3 - Laid Back “Sunshine Reggae”.
Yrs,
DJ Hot Donna
P.S.
More good vibes via duh
P.P.S. You know what’s a really good idea? Searching yr itunes for ‘Sunshine’.
Donna Juana 28: Old-timey old-timeyness (or 30’s Jazz / 70’s Zazz)

Lev’s radio show airs every Sunday night on 10pm on WHFR. Episodes are archived online.
First download/stream tonight’s episode. And while you listen, read on…
After seeing Altman’s The Long Goodbye at FiFo, I’m now reading the Chandler original. For those of who haven’t seen the movie, its big joke is that it resets a 1940s detective story in 1970s Hollywood. And of course now the movie’s appeal is largely nostalgia for freewheeling 1970s Hollywood, when Altman could do what he wanted and Elliot Gould and Nina Van Pallandt were sex symbols.
FUN-nilly enough, lots of parts of the movie that seem most 70s to me are from the book. Like remember when the gangster says “I make lots of dough. I got to make lots of dough to juice the guys I gotta juice in order to make lots of dough to juice the guys I gotta juice.” ? Or when Marlowe aks “Is this the where I’m supposed to say ‘What’s this all about?’ and he says ‘Shut up! I ask the questions’?” Doesn’t that seem like pure Altman improv in the movie? It’s in the book!
Similarly, the two records that make up tonight’s radio show, Nilsson’s A Little Touch of Shmilsson in the Night (1973) and Diana Ross’s Blue (recorded 1972) sound more like what I think of when I think “jazzy” than actual old time jazz.
And here’s something. Altman’s Long Goodbye came out only nineteen years after the book. And Casablanca, the heart of Nilsson’s 1973 nostalgia, was released in 1942. It was less distant in time to Nilsson than Nilsson is to us.

Donna Juana 27 - Baby’s First Balearic Mix
I’ve been called a poseur once or twice and, well, I am often ardently enthusiastically about things - for years - that I basically know nothing about. But its really only through demonstrating my love for things that I figure our why I love them.
So I can’t really tell you anything about Balearic House. I’m only assuming this music is Balearic cuz it all comes from compilations with “Balearic” in the name. Still, I am ALL about it. Most of the dance music I like is of the ecstatic variety - french house, electro. This is different; its like instatic. (MPFreee)
Art of Noise - Moments In Love William Pitt - City Lights The Knife - Pass This On A Guy Called Gerald - Emotions Electric Axe Corner - Tortuga The Thrashing Doves - Jesus on the Payroll The Residents - Kaw-Liga (Prairie Mix) Beautiful Ballet - Energy (Rudy’s Mix) Mandy Smith - I Just Can’t Wait (The Cool and Breezy Jazz Version) Chicco Secci - New York Electra - The Future Bat-Interlude Laid Back - Sunshine Reggae
